Introducing The Plaid Model
نویسنده
چکیده
We introduce and prove some basic results about a combinatorial model which produces embedded polygons in the plane. The model is highly structured and relates to a number of topics in dynamics and geometry.

Luminance contrast affects motion coherency in plaid patterns by acting as a depth-from-occlusion cue
Moving plaid patterns composed of component gratings that differ in luminance contrast tend not to cohere perceptually. Plaid patterns configured to mimic one occlusive grating overlying another also fail to cohere. We hypothesized that plaids constructed of components with different luminance contrasts fail to cohere because these components are interpreted as occlusive surfaces lying in diffe...
متن کاملContrast Gain Control in Plaid Pattern Detection
A plaid is a combination of two gratings whose orientations are orthogonal to each other with the same or similar contrasts. We used plaid patterns as stimuli to investigate the mechanisms underlying the detection of a plaid to understand how the visual system combines information from orientation-selective channels. We used a masking paradigm in which an observer was required to detect a targe...
متن کاملA model of plaid motion perception based on recursive Bayesian integration of the 1-D and 2-D motions of plaid features
We describe a theoretical and computational model of the perception of plaid pattern motion which fully accounts for the majority of cases in which misperception of the direction of motion of Type II plaids has been observed [Yo, C., & Wilson, H. (1992). Perceived direction of moving two-dimensional patterns depends on duration, contrast, and eccentricity. Vision Research 32, 135-147]. The mode...
متن کاملOrientation processing mechanisms revealed by the plaid tilt illusion
The tilt after-effect (TAE) and tilt illusion (TI) have revealed a great deal about the nature of orientation coding of 1-dimensional (1D) lines and gratings. Comparatively little research however has addressed the mechanisms responsible for encoding the orientation of 2-dimensional (2D) plaid stimuli. A multi-stage model of edge detection has recently been proposed [Georgeson, M. A. (1998) Ima...
متن کاملProperties of the recombination of one-dimensional motion signals into a pattern motion signal.
We have examined the human ability to determine the direction of movement of a variety of plaid patterns. The plaids were composed of two orthogonal sine-wave gratings. When the plaid components are of unequal spatial frequency or sometimes of unequal contrast, observers judge the direction of movement incorrectly. In terms of the two-stage model of Adelson and Movshon (1982), these errors may ...
